Despite the ongoing speculation, Marc Guehi's winter signing appears unlikely

Liverpool FC, the reigning champions, are set to navigate a quiet January transfer window despite a series of injuries that have tested their squad depth. The club's approach remains measured and strategic, focusing on long-term potential rather than short-term fixes.

The recent spate of injuries has certainly influenced Liverpool’s outlook for the upcoming transfer window. Conor Bradley's season-ending knee injury against Arsenal and Giovanni Leoni’s torn ACL on debut have been significant blows to the team. Additionally, record signing Alexander Isak is also absent following surgery on a broken leg.

Despite these setbacks, there is no sense of panic within the club. Instead, they've responded in a measured manner by investing in potential talent at academy level. Mor Talla Ndiaye was secured from Amitie for around £1million while Ifeanyi Ndukwe and Noah Adekoya are being lined up to bolster Rob Page’s under 21s group.

Defensive depth under scrutiny

Bradley's injury has naturally intensified scrutiny over defensive depth within the squad. Arne Slot's senior cover at centre back now primarily relies on Joe Gomez behind Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate - an arrangement that may seem precarious but is functional due to Liverpool's flexible strategy.

Players like Jeremie Frimpong, Gomez and Calvin Ramsay can all operate at right back while Dominik Szoboszlai, Curtis Jones and Wataru Endo have filled in before when needed.

Speculation regarding Marc Guehi has resurfaced amidst this backdrop; however, it seems unlikely that he will be signed during this winter window. Despite coming close to signing him last summer for £35million before Crystal Palace intervened at the last moment, Liverpool are expected to wait until his contract expires in June. A winter deal would not only require a significant fee but also a substantial signing-on payment for Guehi, making restraint the more logical approach.

Outgoings unlikely beyond loans

Talk of departures has also been subdued. While Juventus may be interested in Federico Chiesa on loan, Liverpool have little interest in weakening their forward line, especially with Isak sidelined and Ekitike only recently back from injury. Any discussion around Chiesa's departure would require "a significant permanent offer" and a clear replacement.

For now, movement is expected to be confined to youngsters seeking minutes elsewhere, with Amara Nallo among those likely to head out on loan.

Liverpool's January plans reflect their commitment to strategic thinking and long-term investment despite the immediate challenges posed by injuries. This measured approach underscores the club's confidence in its existing squad depth and its ability to navigate through this testing period.
